DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner will celebrate Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day on Saturday\,\nMay 23 (Memorial Day Weekend)\, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a free public open house and the 17th\nAnnual Canoe & Wooden Boat Show. This annual event marks the museum’s season opening and features a full\nday of activities\, including access to the exhibit hall\, demonstrations in the canoe workshop\, live outdoor music\,\nfood and beverages in the beer garden\, a silent auction\, a canoe raffle\, and the popular wooden boat show.\n17th Annual Canoe & Wooden Boat Show Highlights\nThe Canoe & Wooden Boat Show remains the centerpiece of the celebration. More than 15 exhibitors are\nexpected to display wooden boats of many styles and eras—from classic heritage craft to contemporary\ndesigns—along with vintage paddling equipment and watercraft-related artifacts. Among the early confirmed\nexhibitors are Paul Klonowski of Mundelein (IL)\, presenting two Loonworks canoes built by Tom MacKenzie\, and\nThomas Knuteson of Waukesha (WI)\, displaying a 1948 Lake Snipe paired with a 1948 4.5 hp Martin outboard\nmotor.\nFeatured Guest Exhibitor: Michael Grace\nNew this year\, the boat show introduces a featured “celebrity exhibitor” program. The inaugural spotlight falls\non Michael Grace of Gray\, Georgia—a writer\, photographer\, historian\, collector\, and restorer of antique wooden\ncanoes and related ephemera. Grace will present a newly restored Racine Indian Paddler lap strake canoe\,\ncomplementing the museum’s current Wisconsin Canoe Builders exhibit. He will also discuss the specialized\ntools\, techniques\, and restoration materials he has researched and tested extensively—an area expected to\ndraw strong interest from canoe enthusiasts and restorers alike.\nSpecial Canoe Auction\nAnother highlight of the day will be an auction featuring recently donated watercraft. Items include: A 1910 Old\nTown Charles River canoe (serial #12844)\, in excellent condition and water-ready; A second full-size canoe of\nunknown origin\, ready for use; and an Old Town restoration project canoe. Additional details and photos will be\nposted on the museum website prior to the event.\nLive Music\, Food & Beer Garden\nThroughout the day\, visitors can enjoy live music and refreshments in the outdoor beer garden on the museum’s\n“back porch” stage. Featured performers include Little Way\, a Northwoods-based husband-and-wife country\nduo and Blu Kanu\, a local acoustic sibling duo performing favorites from the 1970s to today.\nFree Community Event\nThis free annual celebration welcomes visitors of all ages and interests—from paddling enthusiasts and\ncollectors to families and first-time museum guests. SUMMARY:WCHM Author Talk: Frank Bures - "Pushing the River"
DESCRIPTION:On July 11\, 2025\, at 6:00 PM\, the WCHM will be hosting author Frank Bures on his new book\, Pushing the River: An Epic Battle\, A Lost History\, A Near Death\, and Other True Canoeing Stories.\nBures is an award-winning author\, having won “The Year’s Best Sports Writing 2022\,” Gold Award Feature Story at the MMPA Excellence Awards in 2018\, and many others. Pushing the River was released this April\, and features a collection of true canoeing stories “as varied as the waters\, weather\, and rhythms of a canoe trip.” His collection features two kayakers who escaped the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire in the Waters\, a supernatural scare in Quetico Provincial Park in the 1970s\, and Bures’s experience.\n	His largest essay\, which is also told in an article\, through the Minnesota Historical Society\, is an account of the battle for the Mississippi River paddling record. Bures’s narrates the lost history of the Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby in the 1940s and 1950s. The 450-mile race on the Upper Mississippi features the dominance of racers from the Leech Lake Indian Reservation\, canoe-racing legend Gene Jensen\, members of the Tibbets family\, and the unacknowledged contribution of the Ojibwe canoe builders Jim and Bernie Smith\, whose design features are now part of the modern canoe-racing landscape.\n	Bures will be discussing his book and the essays and tales within it at the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner\, Wisconsin\, on July 11 at 6:00 PM. Admission is free. We are also honored to host Northwind Book & Fiber as they will be selling copies of Bures’s book.

DESCRIPTION:Canoe & Wooden Boat Show\n\nThe Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum (WCHM) in Spooner is once again making plans to celebrate Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day in 2024 on Saturday May 25 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This free event marks the opening of the fourteenth season for the museum\, and will include open house in the museum exhibit hall\, ongoing activities in the canoe workshop\, live music and food and beverage outdoors in the beer garden\, a silent auction and canoe raffle\, and of course the Canoe & Wooden Boat Show.\n​The Canoe & Wooden Boat will be the highlight of the day. Over twenty exhibitors are expected to display wooden boats of all shapes\, sizes\, and designs –both classic and modern– as well as all kinds of classic and vintage water and paddling related items.Last year we were happy to feature Tom Matthiae of Hayward who brought a 14 foot wooden lapstrake canoe that he built.  Stewart River Boatworks from Knife River\, Minnesota\, was there with two solo canoes\, a Solitude and Firefly\, and two tandem canoes\, an Ami and Mon Amie\, for sale. Mike Knuth of Duluth showed his 1930s Thompson Brothers Indian model canoe which he restored in 2015. Many Waters Boatworks from Minneapolis  showed a canoe custom made for YMCA Camp Menogyn. Megan Johnson from Pine City\, Minnesota\, had her handmade Megusta Paddles on sale. \nThere is always room for more\, booth space is free\, and reserving a space is easy. You can use our online registration form\, or write to info@wisconsincanoeeritagemuseum.org or call 715-635-2479. \n\n\n\n\nFood & Music In The Beer Garden \nWhile the Canoe & Wooden Boat Show goes on through the day\, the outdoor beer garden will once again feature food\, beverage\, and live music on the “back porch” stage. In 2024 we’ll enjoy the music and shenanigans of Blu Kanu and also Les Fils du Voyageur\, along with burgers\, brats\, and beverages from Bent Paddle Brewery in Duluth. \nBlu Kanu performs crowd favorites from the 70s through present times. These two sibling troubadours engage the audience and create an atmosphere where folks want to join in singing or play one of the many percussive instruments the duo shares. With a lot of positive energy when performing\, they make the most of their “sibling DNA harmonies.”\n​\nLes Fils du Voyageur brings the fur trade era to life through songs of the voyageurs. Performed a capella in three part harmony\, and portrayed in authentic period costume\, Les Fils du Voyageur present an extensive collection of paddling\, working and playing songs that paint an exciting historical overview of the life and times of a voyageur.

DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum will host its fourth annual “Canoe & Brew” event on Sun.\, Sept. 24\, 2023\, from 3-6pm at Round Man Brewing Co. in downtown Spooner. \nTound Man has provided the beer tasting in past years for Canoe & Brew\, and this year they will be opening up their entire brewery to WCHM for the event and providing food as well. \nWhile attendees are sampling the local brew\, they can expect to meet some interesting personalities\, hear some live music\, and have a chance to win some of the extra raffle prizes that will be given away before the drawing for the annual canoe raffle. This year’s event will be limited to 100 attendees\, so reservations are highly recommended.
